Crime in Cotgrave is reducing faster than anywhere else in south Rushcliffe, new figures show. The town has seen reductions across the board, with the biggest reductions in criminal damage and non-dwelling burglary. Between April 1 and June 30 this year, overall crime in Cotgrave fell 60% to 81 incidents compared to 135 in the same period last year. There were 19 incidents of criminal damage compared to 47 in the same quarter of 2009/10, also representing a 60% reduction. Non-dwelling burglary, which includes shed and garage break-ins, fell from 14 in the first three months of the last recording year to just two incidents so far this year - a huge drop of 85% Incidents of violence were down by more than half, from 28 last year to 13. There was a 40% drop in vehicle crime, falling from 15 offences to nine. Figures for June 2010 alone show very low levels of reported crimes in all major categories and all are significantly down on June 2009. There was only one house burglary in the town during the entire month - and that resulting from the house being left insecure. One non-dwelling burglary was reported. There were just four vehicle crimes, most of which resulted from those vehicles being left insecure. Three offences of violence and eight criminal damage incidents were reported during June. Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Phil Hallam said: "We are delighted with these reductions, which reflect the feedback we've been getting from residents of Cotgrave, who say they have seen major improvements in the past 12 months. "Crime is falling month on month and antisocial behaviour also continues to decline. Both of these trends have a huge impact on the quality of life of local residents. "We can reduce crime further and make Cotgrave even safer by heeding the vast range of crime prevention advice that is available from the police and our partners." Insp Hallam added: "Our targeting of the most prolific offenders has clearly worked. We have arrested and charged those responsible for the most serious of offences and worked with others who wish to turn their lives around through the offender management programmes." There is indeed a lot of good news and the police are to be congratulted on their strategy and without critising their significant achievements, police operations are only part of the picture. Rushcliffe Borough Council has played a major part in a crime reduction strategy. Mark Clifford of Positive Futures has worked extremely hard with diversionary initiatives. The youth service is invloved in intervention with young people. A lot of this is evidenced by the young persons disco at Cotgrave Welfare when over 100 young people attended without a single problem. The Town Council is proud to work in partnership with all of these organisations and we will continue to support all of them to "make Cotgrave smile." However in spite of all of these successes there is no room for complacency. Cotgrave residents need to support our young people and help them become proud of their neighbourhood. Some Cotgrave parents need to have greater involvement in their children and young people's well being. I still see quite young children roaming the streets at ten or eleven o'clock at night. Do you know where your children are and what they are doing?Finally, some of the credit must be given to Cotgrave residents who have helped the police by reporting crime. I look forward to even more record crime reduction and working with all of the organisations involved to continue not only "making Cotgrave smile" but also to make Cotgrave the safest place in Rushcliffe with the lowest crime rate; but we can't do it without you.
